Trail Conditions History for North Woods

27 January 2026

Another 2 inches of dry powder last evening to freshen up any tracks - plenty of snow on the trails. Cold this morning at 2 degrees with -7 wind chill. Cold weather to remain through the week with more snow forecast for this afternoon.

Difficult to give an accurate total accumulation from the storm due to the heavy winds that caused significant drifting in windblown areas but combining local observations with reports, North Woods trails received about 14 inches of fresh powder so far on top of the decent base we had before the start of the storm ... and it's still snowing with the possibility of another 3 inches or so of additional powder accumulating today! Winds calmed down late last evening but it's gusty again this morning with current temperature around 7 degrees and a wind chill of 3 degrees - high today of 12 degrees is forecast. Access and parking may still be difficult this morning but, if you can make it to the trails expect a winter wonderland and pulse raising trailbreaking ....

6+ inches of packable snow accumulated on the North Woods trails yesterday afternoon through evening. Temperatures were on the mild side resulting in snow on the dense, somewhat wet side providing a good snow for building the base to cover rocks on rougher trails. Temperatures remained mild overnight but will gradually drop over the course of today and tomorrow eventually reaching sub-zero temperatures by Saturday with the possibility of additional drier snow - skiing should be decent if not very good on all trails with the possibility to be great through next week!

Snow continued beyond the forecasted window into Sunday evening and through the night freshening up the North Woods trails with a few more inches of dry powder - trails conditions should be pretty nice today! Temperatures will be colder today and especially cold tomorrow so be prepared with layers, stay hydrated and bring along some snacks for energy. Temperatures are forecast to moderate a little on Wednesday but still remain in the 30's before dropping again along with more snow in the forecast - trail conditions should be good thru the end of January if the current forecast holds true!

18 January 2026

We received about 2 more inches of powdery snow overnight as the temperatures dropped totaling about 8 inches since Thursday ... still not enough to avoid rocks on the rougher North Woods trails but skiing on the grassier trails such as North Woods and Mountain View should be decent. Temperatures dropped overnight with current temperature at 22 degrees F - temperatures will continue to fall through the day further firming up the base and temperatures aren't forecast to climb out of the 30's through the week so, the snow should be around for a few days with very cold temperatures expected Monday and Tuesday but no major additional snow the next couple of days.

North Woods trails received about 4 inches of fresh snow over the past day but this arrived on the heels of essentially bare trails and rain Wednesday prior to the snowfall. Cold temperatures have firmed up the base a bit and an additional 5 inches of dry snow is possible beginning this evening through tomorrow. With any luck, decent conditions will return on the grassier NW trails and hold for several days with very cold temperatures expected early in the next week and some additional fresh snow possible.

Happy New Year! Winds picked up overnight causing some drifting but it looks like we received another 3 - 5 inches of powdery snow overnight! North Woods Trails should be pretty nice but, considering the drifting and light density of the snow, some rocks may still be possible, especially in sections such as the climb up North Woods trail from the lower lot on Tunnel Road. A winter storm warning remains in effect for the North Woods area until 10:00 this morning with gusty winds and more snow - probably only flurries but, up to an inch possible? Tomorrow will bring a little milder conditions but, cold enough to hold the snow through the weekend at least...

Hard to judge average accumulation since Monday because of the heavy winds and drifting - Hidden Valley Ski Area is reporting 8 inches but I think that's optimistic ... nevertheless, the North Woods trails are covered with fresh powder. Grassier trails like the North Woods loop above the meadow and Mountain View trail will be skiable but expect thin spots and rocks, especially in windblown areas. Another 3 inches possible overnight which should put the trails in pretty nice shape. Winds are currently calm so the trails should receive full benefit from the new accumulation. Overall, a nice end to the year and good start to the New Year....

Good morning! Windy conditions and warm temperatures along with rain - sometimes very heavy - thru last evening and into the morning had a devastating effect on the snow … virtually no snow remaining with many bare areas and the snow that is remaining essentially the consistency of heavy slush. It’s actually snowing now but temperatures remain in the high 30's so snow landing on very wet ground. Winds remain very gusty. The tree across Tunnel Road still remains but, due to the heave snow melt, it’s passable by going around off the side of the road since the tree is near the widened aprons where the snowmobile trail intersects Tunnel Road - the road itself and the parking area are down to bare gravel. It'll take some time and colder weather for the trails to recover…but, unfortunately, that's not in the current forecast with daytime temperatures expected to be above freezing thru the next week and nighttime lows barely dipping into the high teens....

Good morning - the NW trails were great earlier in the week but, unfortunately, yesterdays thaw followed by cold overnight temperatures have left the tracks icy and untracked areas with a breakable crust - it’ll like soften as the day progresses but a large tree isn’t down across Tunnel Road is blocking access to the parking area …I’ve reported it but not sure when it’ll be cleared.

The North Woods trails have received over 10 inches of fresh powder since last evening on top of the existing decent base from recent snows ... and it's still snowing. The winds remain relatively calm and temperatures feel pretty mild for actually being in the low teens - if you're in the mood to break fresh trails, today seems like a good day for it.

11 December 2025

About 3-5 inches of new accumulation as of earlier today - snow started out on the wet side last evening but temperatures fell quickly overnight firming up the base and resulting in nice powder on the surface. Gusty winds resulted in drifting in windblown areas but coverage on the trails was decent - not enough base to cover rocks but enough to make the grassier trails in the NW skiable. Snow has accumulated another inch or two through the day and flurries continue ... Tunnel Road is only plowed to the base of the hill at the Rt. 31 LHHT Shelter access road parking lot - the road is not maintained up to the meadow parking lot again this year; Shafer Run Road should be plowed to the parking area at the access road leading to the Warming Hut as usual - deer season remains open so, dress appropriately with fluorescent orange.

3 December 2025

First significant snowfall for the season yesterday resulting in about 5-6 inches in the North Woods and surrounding trails along Laurel Ridge. Temperatures dropped overnight and are forecast to remain below freezing through next week with a little more snow possible before this weekend and a few more inches before next weekend. If you decide to get out on the trails to enjoy the early snow remember that it's peak deer hunting season so wear appropriate fluorescent orange ...
