| Assuming the ridge to the north received the same weather as that nearer the ridge at Rt. 31, Laurel Summit area should have received fine freezing rain overnight resulting in a firm, slightly crusty layer over the existing 4-5 inch base. This didn't hurt anything but didn't provide much additional coverage either - needed for the rocky trails around the Laurel Summit Warming Hut. The freezing rain has tapered off turning to snow now but the forecast is not calling for significant accumulation over the weekend. | 1/21/2012 |

| 3:10pm @ The Burning Rock: 28 degrees, 8" of new snow. Great skiing, both DH & XC. All trails out on Spruce Knob have been broken & set for classic skiing. Skaters need not apply. Blue Knob sold the baby Pisten Bully that was used in the past for nordic grooming. As you skaters know, nothing is better for skating than a track prepared by a snow cat. The baby Pisten Bully was swapped in, & was replaced w/ a full sized cat to supplement the fleet for downhill grooming. Perhaps they will send out the big cat & groom for us. I am not holding my breath. The mountain manager is not a nordic skier & apparently has not been convinced over the years that it is to Blue Knob's best interest to have a legitimate cross country operation. It's a shame. After all, how many XC ski areas have lodging on the property? Blue Knob has dozens of condos at reasonable prices. I'm told that they will not even send down their one & only snowmobile to drag the homemade sled that our old mountain manager made. He was an avid XC skier & took a real interest in promoting nordic skiing here at Blue Knob. Oh well...rentals & lessons still are available.
